Compost Connection
Visit Compost ConnectionThis new (2024) Sheffield community enterprise plans to create living compost from domestic and commercial food waste, to be sold commercially and made available to community organisations in food production. They will work at community level, connecting growers/producers and consumers.
Collections from households may be every 1-3 weeks, when details are agreed. Sheffield Council’s long term contract with Veolia for household waste collection is a complication; food waste is among the ‘fuel’ for their Sheffield incinerator, so Veolia could claim compensation if some is removed from the ‘waste stream’, even though incineration generates harmful greenhouse gases. On the other hand, plants need healthy soil with bacterial and fungal organisms, which compost can provide.
