An international movement of ordinary people standing up for human rights, producing extraordinary results. Critical Mass Sheffield
Not so much a group as an idea - once a month, massed bands of cyclists flood city roads around the world to reclaim the streets for the most environmentally friendly, fun form of transport. Everyone welcome, just bring a bike and tag along.
Feminist Poster Project
This website archives and shares feminist posters, postcards and stickers for you to print and paste, to encourage designing and sharing feminist posters and putting up them in public places. Sexist advertisement and misogynist media are all around us. If we want to fight this patriarchal propaganda, we have to produce our own images and messages. You can contribute your own self-made posters, postcards and stickers too.
Liberty
If you think civil liberties are part of American history you're missing some news. Detention without trial, deportation to torture and removal of rights to speech and protest are creeping into the UK. Money Advice Service
The Money Advice Service is a free service started by the UK Government to provide unbiased money advice and information without jargon. It's confidential and independent, so they're not trying to sell you anything. Could be useful if you've got money. Or even more useful if you haven't.
Mutual Aid Sheffield (MASH)
MASH is a voluntary group providing solidarity and support through direct action, for members with problems like crap landlords, housing issues, benefit claims, problems with access to public services, bullying and victimisation, sexual harassment, discrimination and unpaid wages, strikes, workplace actions and community struggles. The group is open to anyone, working or unemployed. It is non-hierarchical, independent of all political parties and trade unions, non-profit and self-organised.
NO2ID
NO2ID is a campaigning organisation focussed on the threat to liberty and privacy posed by the rapid growth of the database state, of which "ID cards" are the most visible part. Entirely independent, they do not endorse any party, nor campaign on any other topic. A recent success (2010) was in getting the Identity Cards Act 2006 repealed, but the struggle goes on. The Sheffield group meets monthly.
Nomad
Campaigning, support and advice for people under the strains of social housing, council housing or homelessness. In a sea of difficulties, Nomad has been a lifeboat for two decades. Its Burngreave office deals with tenancy support, and its West Street office helps in other areas. Opportunities for volunteers also available. Tel. Sheff. 2755441
Open Rights Group Sheffield
This group offers open meetings for anyone interested to discuss and learn about the various issues thrown up by new technology, Things like digital rights and privacy, copyright, 'copyleft', open data, censorship and freedom of speech, software freedom and open source, social networking, digital inclusion, electronic democracy and internet law....
Sheffield Anarchist Federation
Sheffield group of the Anarchist Federation, which aims to create a free and equal society through abolition of capitalism and all oppression (racism, sexism and other forms of oppression, as well as war and environmental destruction, by which the ruling class weaken and divide us). Sheffield AF publishes The Fargate Speaker
Sheffield Anti Cuts Alliance (SACA)
An autonomous and independent organisation fighting all cuts to jobs and services in Sheffield. It's made up of workers, students, the unemployed, pensioners, trade unionists, volunteers, and residents. The group was initially proposed by the PCS trade union, quickly gaining support from plenty more, as well as the trades council and the Labour and Green Parties. Whilst it remains independent from all of these, members can be from any background with an anti-cuts agenda.
Sheffield Equality Trust
We live in a very unequal city, in one of the most divided developed countries on Earth. As one example, some northern and eastern areas of Sheffield have an average 14 year shorter life expectancy than the wealthier west side. Sheffield Equality Trust plans to change this situation.
Sheffield for Democracy
This is an informal group campaigning for greater democracy, citizens rights, a fairer voting system and more accurate representation of the public will in Parliament. It welcomes supporters of all political parties or none.

Unlock Democracy
The UK's leading campaign for democracy, rights and freedoms. A grassroots movement, owned and run by members which campaigns on issues like fair and open elections, a written constitution and bringing power closer to the people. It incorporates a predecessor organisation, Charter 88

Workers' Educational Association (WEA) Rotherham branch
The WEA is a long-established adult education movement, with roots in the co-operative movement. It's run voluntarily and democratically, so local people decide for themselves what they want to learn, rather than government or big business. Education for both personal fulfilment and collective advancement for a better society is its commitment through a rolling programme of courses. This is the Rotherham branch, there is also a Sheffield one, among many across the UK.
