New Takes on Fallen Women in Global Cinema

A talk by Dr Kate Taylor Jones of the School of East Asian Studies at the University of Sheffield. She explores global cinematic representations of the image of the prostitute, and the debate on repressive and empowering depictions.

Gig in aid of ASSIST helping refused asylum seekers. Songlines cover star Dobet Gnahore from Côte d’Ivoire who performs exciting traditional African music mixed with electronic samples. Discussion includes Andy Morgan (author, journalist, photographer and ex-manager of Algerian Tuareg group, Tinariwen).

In the first half of the gig, Andy will explore with Dobet something about Côte d’Ivoire, her background and her music, illustrated by some key songs. The second half will feature a full set of her astonishing music with her full band.
