Never Again is Now - Holocaust Memorial Day in Sheffield

Mon 27 Jan 2020, 5.45pm, Hartshead Square S1 2FD

Monday 27th January 2020 marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, yet we still have genocides, wars, fascism and borders. The UK government is committing atrocities by detaining refugees in immigration centres and sending them back to the countries that they fled. The right of refugees to seek sanctuary in the UK is too often judged by their willingness to assimilate and their ability to contribute to the economy.

Meet at Hartshead Square 5.45pm to demand sanctuary for all refugees, with a vigil at Vulcan House and following discussion on the UK treatment of Jewish refugees in the 1930s and 1940s.

Organised by If Not Now Then, and Sheffield Student Action for Refugees (STAR)

Holocaust Memorial Day exhibition, films and vigil

Mon 27 Jan 2020, The Winter Gardens, 90 Surrey St. S1 2LH

As the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (in the UK since 2001) we share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the world today. The 2020 Theme is "Stand Together", as The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust want us to reflect on how genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups, and how these tactics can be challenged by individuals standing together with their neighbours, and speaking out against oppression.

"In the years leading up to the Holocaust, Nazi policies and propaganda deliberately encouraged divisions within German society, urging "Aryan" Germans to keep themselves separate from their Jewish neighbours..."

A collection of posters and artwork is being displayed in the Winter Garden, including exhibitions from local schools. Short films will be screened in the Winter Garden on Holocaust Memorial Day [Monday 27 January], from 12pm to 4.30pm, and a candlelit vigil runs from 5.45pm to 7pm in the Winter Garden.

Sheffield UCU (University & College Union) is commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day by organising this talk, open to the public, free to attend but book on the link below.

"The talk will place antisemitism in the larger context of Europe’s ‘Jewish Question’, whose roots lie in antiquity. Class Workshop by D Hunter

Sat 1 Feb 2020, 10am – Sun 2 Feb, 5pm, One Space, 18-20 Union St. S1 2JP

A 2 day workshop engaging with our lived experiences of the class system. Following on from the suummer 2019 event: www.chavsolidarity.com/post/class-workshop-summer-2019

Class helps shape all aspects of our lives, including how we organise in social justice movements. This two day workshop aims to deconstruct our classed experiences and the ways in which we reproduce the same class system we fight against, in order to create stronger, more egalitarian social justice movements.

Support the mobilisation of cross-class people working towards radical social change. Support a culture of mutual aid and accountability amongst individuals living and working in Sheffield and surrounding area.

This workshop aims to make space for poor and working class folks to centre and articulate their own experiences and knowledge, share with others. And to support middle class and owning class folks gain recognition and take responsibility for the psychological and material benefits of their class position. Space to talk and plan steps towards change, for taking action such as collectivising and redistributing financial resources.
